Q: Is my keyboard fixable? Is it worth fixing?

Our attitude is that "everything is fixable." It's true, and we loving fixing keyboards. The real question is whether the value of the keyboard is more than the repair. For keyboards that cost under $200, you should consider replacement over repair. For everything else, give us a call!

Q: Can old keyboards be fixed?

Most manufacturers supply parts for at least 10 years, but this is not a hard and fast rule. Older keyboards are usually still fixable even if new parts cannot be sourced. At Lawrenceville Piano, we can repair damaged circuit boards, resolder loose connections, swap out old capacitors, troubleshoot LCDs on the fritz, and mend cracked plastic components, among other things.

Q: What brands do you service?

We service keyboards from Yamaha, Kawai, Kurzweil, Alesis, Nord, Casio, Korg, Suzuki, Artesia. We do both in-home and in-shop repairs, depending on the nature of the repair and the customer's wishes.

Sticky Keys

Sticky keys are a common problem, and usually due to a build-up of debris under the keys. In most cases, some cleaning and lubrication is the solution. Occasionally broken keys need to be replaced as well. This is a standard repair and can usually be done in 1-2 hours.

Loud / Soft Keys

Loud notes, soft notes, and silent notes are also very common and due to dust and dirt getting under the keys. There are rubber strips under the keys that make contact with a circuit board to signal the piano to play the note. Dust and dirt interrupts that.

This problem requires disassembly and cleaning, but often replacing the old, dirty rubber strips is also a good idea. This repair is very common, economical, and only takes 1-2 hours to complete.

No Power / No Sound

If your keyboard will not turn on, or turns on but there is no sound, you should first check the following:

1. Power is available at the wall (try a light)

2. The power adaptor (if applicable) is producing power. These burn out after years of use. Replace it with the correct VOLTAGE, the PIN SIZE, and most importantly, the POLARITY of the adaptor.

3. Wiggle the plug in the back gently. Does power come on?

4. Try headphones both in and out. There should be a faint click when headphones are inserted and removed.

5. Make sure the volume is up all the way. Wiggle the knob.

6. Let it sit on for 15 minutes to see if anything improves.

Things do burn out and break internally over time, and this is normal, and it is fixable. If you believe you need service for a "no power" or "no sound" type of problem, we can do that! It will require a bit of testing and possible repair or replacement of electrical components, or entire circuit boards, whichever is most economical for you.

LCD Problems

LCDs are incredibly common on digital pianos, and often crucial to their function. If your LCD is acting up, there are a couple of options. We can often source a replacement LCD screen, though they are one of the more expensive components in a keyboard ($100-$500). We can also attempt to repair the LCD if it is due to loose connections. Yamaha YPG and DGX keyboards often have this problem.

In lower-end keyboards, LCD problems can often mean it is time to get a new keyboard - the cost to repair may not make sense.

Suzuki Ace Rod Replacement

Suzuki's digital pianos have a particular repair issue that causes keys (sometimes most of them!) to stick or move slowly. The repair involves taking the action out (key assembly) and bringing it take to the shop to replace the "ace rod," a set of metal rods that act as a pivot under each key.

This issue can be remedied and we are equipped and experienced in dealing with it. Once we replace the ace rod, you'll never have to do it again!

Kawai Slip-Tape Replacement

Many Kawai digital pianos have a component that causes slow and sticking keys over time. At the rear end of each keystick is a pad they call a "slip tape" that needs to be replaced. This can be done for a few notes or as a whole set replacement.

We can replace the slip tapes with an original product, or an upgraded piano-grade felt pad (pictured above) which will last even longer.
